Séamus Hennessy is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Kilruane McDonaghs and with the Tipperary senior inter-county team.
Career
Hennessy won All-Ireland Minor Hurling winners medals in 2006 and 2007 at wing-forward, and a Munster Minor Hurling medal in 2007, and also captained Tipperary to win the Munster Under 21 Hurling title in 2008. Hennessy was inspired by Jim Flanagan.
On the 6 March 2010, Hennessy was victorious with NUI Galway hurling team in the final of the Fitzgibbon Cup. NUI Galway scored 1–17 in defeating the 1–16 of Waterford IT. Hennessy played right-half back and scored two points, one of which was pivotal as it forced extra-time. It was the first time in 30 years that the Fitzgibbon Cup was won by NUI Galway.
He made his Senior inter-county debut for Tipperary against Waterford in the 2009 Waterford Crystal Cup, scoring 3 points from right half-forward in a Tipperary victory, and scored 6 points in total in the 2009 Waterford Crystal Cup competition. He made his National Hurling League debut as a substitute against Cork in the 2009 League campaign, scoring two points from play after coming on as a substitute. In September 2009, Hennessy was a non playing substitute in the 2009 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final defeat to Kilkenny. On 30 May 2010, Hennessy made his Championship debut against Cork in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship quarter-final in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Tipperary ended up losing the game by 3–15 to 0–14, with Hennessy coming on as a substitute in the second half for Brian O'Meara.[1][2] On 28 July 2010, Hennessy scored 5 points for Tipperary as they defeated Clare in the 2010 Munster Under-21 Hurling final at Semple Stadium, winning by 1–22 to 1–17.[3]
On 5 September 2010, Hennessy came on as a second half substitute to score a point as Tipperary won their 26th All Ireland title, beating reigning champions Killkenny by 4–17 to 1–18 in the final, preventing Kilkenny from achieving an historic 5-in-a-row, it was Hennessy's first All-Ireland winners medal.[4] Six days later on 11 September 2010, Tipperary clinched the All Ireland Under-21 title by defeating Galway by 5–22 to 0–12 at Semple Stadium, with Hennessy starting in midfield and scoring three points.[5] In October 2010, Hennessy was selected as the 2010 Bord Gáis Energy Breaking Through Player of the Year for his performances during Tipperary's All Ireland Under-21 success.[6]
